I’d like to introduce you to Cherry Turmeric Bedtime Tea.
If you read this blog or follow me on social, you know I drink coffee… on the regular. It’s my first thang in the morning thang and occasionally (read: often) I enjoy a decaf latte or homemade eggnog frappuccino in the afternoon.
Or sometimes I get a little crazy (or caffeinated…it’s only semantics people) and pour espresso over my oatmeal. But I must confess, this coffee lover met Cherry Turmeric Bedtime Tea. I’m not one of those that likes to drink coffee before bed, sure I’ll take decaf coffee with dessert but right before bed, something warm, comforting, sleep inducing (and freaking healthy) is in order.
Because tart cherries are one of the best natural sources of melatonin, I steeped chamomile tea in tart cherry juice and stirred in a heaping dose of ground turmeric, fresh ginger, and fresh whole tart cherries–> and Cherry Turmeric Bedtime Tea was born.
Guys, this Cherry Turmeric Bedtime Tea will undoubtedly change your coffee or tea life. I can promise you that. In fact, I can pretty much drink this whole pot myself… thus putting myself into sleepy dreamland state.
Grab a cup and let’s do this thang.

Quick Question: Do you recommend any alternatives to the chamomile tea? I’m not a huge fan of that particular flavor.
Kristina LaRue, RD, CSSD says
I think any caffeine free sleepy time tea will be good 🙂 How about Lavender or Lemon Balm?
Sarah says
Do you eat the cherries at the bottom of the tea after they’ve thawed in the hot liquid? Like one would with a shirley temple or something?
Kristina LaRue, RD, CSSD says
I do! 🙂

Hi Kristina,
Can we use hot water on tart cherries? I read somewhere hot water makes the tart cherries less effective but i prefer hot with chamomile at night rather than cold. What do you advise?
Kristina LaRue, RD, CSSD says
Some antioxidants can be lost by heating, especially vitamin C when boiling. However since you’re drinking the liquid from the cherries I would say most would be retained in the liquid. I don’t have specific research on heating tart cherries in particular however.

I’ve been enjoying the Cherry Tumeric bedtime tea for a week now and I swear I’m sleeping like a bear; it’s amazing and delicious! However, I can’t seem to find the frozen cherries by themselves. I found a mixed bag of dark sweet and tart. Otherwise, only canned tart cherries. I’ve searched Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods and a couple other local specialty food stores. I found the mixed frozen cherries at Kroger, a large chain grocery store. So, I have a few questions.
1. Are canned tart cherries a suitable substitute?
2. Can you make this brew for a few days at a time and store in frig? Will it loose its magic by doing so?
3. Is it just the melatonin in the cherries that propels me into this wonderful deep sleep? I almost feel drugged😱😀
4. Please talk about other benefits of the tea.
5. I’d like to share your recipe with my readers. Would that be ok. Of course giving you proper credit and link to your blog.
*I also add cinnamon to the tea for extra health benefits and taste
Thank you again for this special brew! Allison

Yes to using the canned tart cherries.. also you can order frozen tart cherries online. I get them shipped to me. You can totally brew this ahead of time and put it in the fridge with no loss in magic 🙂 Tart cherries are one of the best sources of melatonin and there is much research around this area with improved sleep quality and duration with consumption of tart cherry juice! Also the turmeric and chamomile help out with sleep too so it’s like a powerful potion!! Cinnamon sounds like a wonderful addition– I’m going to have to try that. Oh and feel free to share a link back to my recipe with your readers.
